With a focus on organic and captivating forms, Topollogy’s design explores themes of technology and connectivity through 3D printing. With a background in biomedical engineering and digital arts, the work of Topollogy seamlessly integrates both physical and artistic components.

Topology Engine

Nature often combines stiff and compliant structures to achieve optimal designs. Topology Engine is a design platform which mimics the network connectivity found in trabecular bone.

(a) Bones need to be strong yet lightweight. Instead of being uniform, their internal structure consists of a lattice of fibers intricately woven together.

(b) The blueprint by the laws of physics governs the transition from a primitive shape to an organically connected structure, with each microscopic element serving a specific functional purpose.

(c) Virtual sculpting is performed using the Bi-directional Evolutionary Structural Optimization (BESO) method, which iteratively refines the shape. In each cycle, the least effective elements are removed, while some previously removed elements are reintroduced, continuing until the final design is achieved.
